A Heathrow layover between 4 and 10 hours is long enough to do something worthwhile, but short enough that central London isn't practical. This guide covers the best things to do near Heathrow that actually make use of your time, whether you want to eat, explore, or simply decompress before your next flight.
First: Know Your Timings
Before you commit to anything, work backwards from your departure:
- Security and boarding: Allow at least 90 minutes from outside the terminal
- Travel time: Add 15–30 minutes each way for anything off-airport
- Eating: A proper pub meal takes 60–90 minutes (worth doing properly)
This means a 6-hour layover realistically gives you about 3–3.5 hours of usable time outside the terminal.
1. Have a Proper Pub Lunch or Dinner at The Anchor
For most Heathrow layover travellers, this is the single best use of time.
The Anchor is a traditional British pub in Stanwell Moor village, 7 minutes from Terminal 5 and 10–15 minutes from all other terminals. It offers:
- A genuine British pub experience (not a chain, not an airport restaurant)
- Home-cooked food including fish & chips, Sunday roasts (weekends), burgers, and daily specials
- Bottled beers and proper draught lagers
- A large beer garden for sunny days
- Free parking if you've picked up a rental car
For many international travellers, a layover stop at a proper British local pub is itself the attraction, the kind of place you can't find in an airport terminal anywhere in the world.
Practical details:
- Postcode for taxi: TW19 6AQ
- Open from 4pm Tuesday–Friday, noon Saturday–Sunday
- Sunday roast is walk-in friendly, with booking recommended for peak slots (call 01753 682707)
- Monday: pub open, kitchen closed

2. Visit Windsor (Longer Layovers Only)
Windsor is 25–30 minutes from Heathrow by taxi (around £25–30) and is one of the most rewarding day trips from the airport. Windsor Castle is open daily and offers a glimpse of actual royal history rather than tourist-trap replicas.
Realistic time needed: minimum 3 hours including travel. Only viable for layovers of 8+ hours.
3. Explore Staines-upon-Thames
Staines is 10–15 minutes from Heathrow and has a pleasant riverside walk along the Thames, a range of cafés and restaurants, and enough to fill 2–3 hours. Less iconic than Windsor but much more practical for shorter layovers.
The Anchor is actually closer to Staines than most airport hotels, about 8 minutes, if you want to combine a riverside walk with a pub lunch.
4. Plane Spotting from The Anchor's Beer Garden
Not a joke. The Anchor's beer garden has views of Heathrow approach paths, and watching planes come in over the village is genuinely impressive if you're an aviation enthusiast. On busy days, a plane every 90 seconds or so. It's one of those experiences that surprises people.

5. Heathrow Airport Itself
Worth mentioning for completeness: Terminal 5's airside facilities are better than most airports in Europe. If you're staying landside, Terminal 5's restaurants and shops are serviceable. Terminals 2 and 3 share the Queen's Terminal complex which has a good range of options.
But if you've already been through Heathrow before, the terminals offer little that can't be found elsewhere, and certainly nothing as memorable as a proper British pub.
The Quick-Reference Layover Plan
4-hour layover:
- Taxi to The Anchor (7–15 mins)
- 60–75 minute pub meal
- Return taxi to terminal
- Through security and boarding
6-hour layover:
- Taxi to The Anchor
- Proper 90-minute pub lunch or dinner with a drink or two
- Short walk around Stanwell Moor village (peaceful, genuinely British)
- Return taxi
- Security
8–10 hour layover:
- Either: Visit Windsor AND stop at The Anchor on the way back
- Or: Extended time in Staines including riverside walk and pub lunch/dinner
Luggage During Your Layover
The Anchor is happy for guests to bring cabin-size luggage and overnight bags. For larger bags, the terminals all have left-luggage facilities (check the Heathrow website for current pricing and locations).
Getting Back to the Terminal
The Anchor is 7–15 minutes from any terminal by taxi or Uber. From Stanwell Moor:
- Terminal 5: ~7 minutes
- Terminal 4: ~10–12 minutes
- Terminals 2 & 3: ~12–15 minutes
Staff at The Anchor can help you call a taxi if needed. Uber works reliably from TW19 6AQ.
