A pub celebration has texture. You've got the hum of the bar, the smell of good food, a warm room in winter or doors open onto a garden in summer. People settle in. They move between the bar and the function space. Conversations happen naturally because the environment encourages it. A hotel function room is a blank canvas. That's its strength and its weakness. Flexibility: Pubs Win This Hands Down

Many hotels run on packages. You pick one, and that's roughly what you get. Ask what can be swapped before you book.

Pubs, good ones anyway, work around what you actually want.

Things you can do at The Anchor:

• Bring a celebration cake. We'll ask whoever brings it to sign our outside-food waiver
• Set your own timings. A start before 12pm or a finish after 10pm is by arrangement, so tell us the times you have in mind.
• Have your dog at your event, on a lead

That flexibility matters because no two celebrations are the same. A christening needs high chairs and an early finish. A 50th birthday needs a sound system. A wake needs quiet dignity and short-notice availability.

Parking: The Hidden Cost Nobody Talks About

If your guests are driving to a hotel near the airport, check what parking costs before you book. If there's a charge, either your guests pay it or you cover it as the host, in which case add it to your total.

At The Anchor, parking is free. Twenty spaces on site, level surface, close to the entrance, CCTV, with additional parking available nearby. For an event with families (car seats, pushchairs, gifts), this matters more than you'd think.

Food Quality: Pub Grub Has Changed

There's an outdated assumption that pub food means microwaved lasagne and frozen chips. That hasn't been true for years, and it's certainly not true at venues that take their food seriously.

At The Anchor, the kitchen turns out stone-baked pizzas on hand-stretched dough (with NGCI bases available), proper Sunday roasts with herb and garlic-crusted roast potatoes, and beef and ale pie. NGCI means No Gluten Containing Ingredients. These dishes are made without gluten-containing ingredients, but everything is prepared in one kitchen, so we can't guarantee there's no cross-contamination. The 5-star food hygiene rating has been maintained for seven consecutive years, and all kitchen staff hold Level 2 food safety qualifications.

For private events, buffet catering ranges from a straightforward Sandwich Buffet to a full Indoor BBQ. Children get proper meals rather than a sad sandwich on a paper plate: burger and chips, chicken nuggets and chips, or mini pizza and chips.

Hotel food is fine. Often good. Occasionally excellent. Taste both if you can, and compare the quotes.

Formality: Matching the Venue to the Occasion

Some events need formality. A corporate awards dinner, a large conference, a black-tie fundraiser: these belong in a hotel. The neutral environment, the uniformed staff, the large-format rooms with staging and lighting rigs. Pubs can't replicate this, and shouldn't try.

But most celebrations aren't formal. Birthday parties, christenings, engagement celebrations, baby showers, retirement dos, wakes: these are personal gatherings where people want to feel comfortable, not like they're at a corporate function.

A pub gets this right instinctively. The dress code is "whatever you're comfortable in." The seating is arranged for conversation, not presentation. The bar is right there, not down a corridor and through two sets of fire doors. People mingle because the space encourages it.

The honest position: Match the venue to the occasion. If your event needs formality, book a hotel. If it needs warmth, book a pub.

When a Hotel Is the Right Choice

We'd be dishonest if we didn't say this clearly: hotels are better for some events.

Large events (100+ guests). Most pubs can't seat hundreds. Hotels can. If you're planning a corporate conference for 300, a pub isn't the right venue.

Events where overnight accommodation is essential. If half your guests are flying in from abroad and need rooms steps from the function space, a hotel connected to Heathrow makes logistical sense. The convenience of not needing taxis between the venue and accommodation has real value.

High-end corporate hospitality. When the venue is part of the impression you're making on clients or stakeholders, a five-star hotel delivers something a pub can't: prestige, exclusivity, and a specific kind of polish.

Events requiring professional-grade AV. Built-in professional AV systems, stage lighting, wireless microphones for 500 people, simultaneous translation: hotels have this infrastructure. Pubs have a TV and a sound system, which covers most needs but not all.

When a Pub Is the Better Choice

For the majority of celebrations we see enquiries about, a pub is the better fit.

Budget-conscious events. At The Anchor, room hire is by the hour, parking is free, and you can price the food and drinks on our cost estimator before you commit.

Family celebrations with children. At The Anchor, children are welcome at all hours. High chairs, buggy space and bottle warming on request are all here, and breastfeeding is welcome. We don't have baby changing facilities. There are kids' party meals and unlimited squash for 20 children or more, and a beer garden where they can run around.

Dog-friendly events. Dogs are welcome throughout the pub, on a lead. We'll have water bowls and biscuits waiting.

Events where character matters. A village pub since 1751, with a beer garden under Heathrow's flight path, has a story.

Short-notice events. Wakes in particular often need organising within 24-48 hours. At The Anchor, we take wakes at short notice, and our wakes page has the detail. We're also close to South West Middlesex Crematorium (10 minutes drive), Staines Cemetery (8 minutes drive), and Slough Crematorium (15 minutes drive).

Casual celebrations. Not every gathering needs a formal structure. Sometimes you just want to get 40 people together, put on a buffet, and let the evening unfold. A pub lets that happen naturally.

Can a pub handle a formal event?

For small formal events (business dinners, retirement presentations, intimate celebrations), yes. For large-scale formal events with staging and complex AV, you'll need a hotel or dedicated conference venue.

What about dietary requirements at a pub?

There are vegetarian and vegan dishes. NGCI dishes and pizza bases are available too, but everything is prepared in one kitchen, so we can't guarantee there's no cross-contamination. The vegan Sunday roast option (beetroot and butternut squash wellington) is genuinely excellent. Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs when you book and we'll do our best.

Is a pub appropriate for a wake?

Yes. Wakes are one of the occasions we host, and we can take one at short notice (24 to 48 hours). Room hire is charged by the hour for the space you book.
