If you are feeding a big group this Christmas, the decision that actually matters is not which food you pick. It is whether people sit down or stand up. Get that right and the rest falls into place. Get it wrong and you spend the evening watching forty people you invited fail to talk to each other.
So this guide is about format, not menus. We run festive buffets and sit-down Christmas bookings at The Anchor in Stanwell Moor, minutes from the Heathrow terminals, and the question we field most in November is some version of "which one do we need?". Here is how we work it out.
The short answer
A buffet is a mingling format. A sit-down meal is a conversation format. Almost every other difference follows from that one.
If the point is that people who rarely see each other get to move around and speak to more than five colleagues, you want a buffet. If the point is a proper shared meal with a beginning, a middle and an end, you want the sit-down. Neither is more festive than the other. They are built for different nights.

The row people underestimate is timing. A buffet absorbs guests arriving across an hour without anything going wrong, which matters if half your group is coming off shift, off a flight, or out of an office that never finishes when it says it will. A sit-down meal punishes that. Someone always turns up as the plates go down.
The row people overestimate is food quality. A buffet is not a lesser meal, it is a different delivery mechanism.
The standing-versus-seated maths
Do this sum before you fall in love with a format. At Christmas we can hold 60 seated or 200 standing. That is more than triple. Chairs and tables eat floor space at an extraordinary rate.
So if your group is 45, both formats are open and it is a genuine choice about atmosphere. If your group is 80, the decision has been made for you: standing is the only way everyone gets in the same room. And if your group is 20, you are better off sitting down, because 20 people spread around a room built for 200 feels thin rather than lively.
In practice, no buffet is purely standing. People perch, park themselves at the end of a table, drift outside. Our dining room seats 26 and holds 50 standing, with French doors onto the garden, so most large groups end up with a mix: a food area plus seating clusters. Ask for that when you enquire about private hire rather than assuming it is one or the other.
Our three festive buffet packages
We run three, and this year they are:

- Festive Premium Grazing
Now the honest bit. We are not listing what is in them here, because the selection is confirmed for your date when you enquire, and we would rather tell you nothing than tell you something that changes.
What we can give you now is the shape: three packages, each a set spread for the whole group rather than a per-person course choice. That is most of what you need in order to choose a format. Prices are live from our system, so ask when you enquire. See menu or contact us for allergen information.
The 30-guest minimum, and what to do if you are under it
All three festive buffets need 30 guests. Everywhere, no exceptions, no rounding up from 28.
We know that is annoying if you have 24. It is a hard floor rather than a starting position, so it is worth checking your number against it before you plan anything around a buffet.
If your group is under 30, the Christmas set menu is the better route anyway. It starts at 4 guests, and each person picks 1, 2 or 3 courses individually rather than the whole table committing to the same thing. The 2 and 3 course tiers need a pre-order, and those choices are due seven days before your booking date. The 1 course tier is pre-book only, no pre-order. Adults on the 2 and 3 course tiers get a glass of prosecco, swappable for orange juice.
A few practical things worth knowing before you enquire:
- The festive window runs 10 November to 20 December 2026, and the 20th is bookable. Within it, sittings run Tuesday to Saturday, plus Sunday from 1pm to 6pm. There are no Monday sittings, the kitchen is closed. Worth knowing before you go looking for a date that suits forty people.
- Every Christmas booking takes a £10 per person deposit, whatever the party size. It comes straight off your bill on the day, and it is refunded in full if you cancel more than seven days ahead.
- We need 24 hours' notice minimum. No same-day Christmas bookings.
- More than 20 guests is not a table booking, it is private hire. Email [email protected], call 01753 682707, or WhatsApp the same number, and a person will talk it through with you.
The bit that catches large groups out: getting them all there
Format is the decision. Arrival is the thing that actually goes wrong, and it gets harder the bigger your group is. Forty people means forty separate journeys, and a buffet only absorbs ragged arrivals if people can actually get to you.
Parking is the one that matters most at this size. We have 20 free spaces on site, level and floodlit, no fees and no time limit while you are with us, plus more parking nearby. For a group of 40 that will not hold everybody at once, so it is worth telling people to share cars or come by bus rather than assuming. If your group is coming off shift or off a flight, the numbers are short: 7 minutes from Terminal 5, 11 from Terminals 2 and 3, 12 from Terminal 4, 8 from Staines and 2 minutes from Junction 14 of the M25. We are outside the ULEZ zone. Dogs are welcome throughout, on a lead and off the furniture.
Access is worth settling before you commit forty people to a date. The car park, the bar and the dining area are step-free, and assistance dogs are always welcome. The beer garden is step free from the car park; from the bar there's one step, with a ramp if you ask ahead. We do not have an accessible toilet. There is a format question in here too: a standing buffet asks a lot more of people than a seated meal does, so if anyone in your group would struggle to stand for a couple of hours, seat them or go seated altogether rather than waiting for them to raise it.
One thing to be clear about before you enquire: we are a village pub, not a party-night venue. There is no party night and no entertainment package attached to a Christmas booking, though we can arrange a DJ if your group asks. How to actually decide
Three questions, in order.
- How many people? Over 60, buffet. Under 30, sit-down. Between the two, keep reading.
- Do you want them moving around? Mixing across teams or across a family, buffet. A proper meal together, sit-down.
- How reliable are the arrival times? Ragged arrivals point to a buffet every time.
